Experience

Whatever your age or position my job is to help you craft a persuasive oral or written presentation in your own voice - especially in high-stakes settings. My experience tutoring comes from 25 years of mentoring researchers, middle managers, and CEOs in how to present their ideas to a skeptical, demanding audience making critical decisions. I have worked in policy analysis, nonprofits, investment funds, associations, national security, federal, state and local government, and the private sector, small organizations and large. If written or oral communications are the difference between your success or failure, you need to consider me. I have a long list of publications at RAND, the nation's premier policy research organization. These include books, monographs, white papers, journal articles and publications. For several years I published a weekly blog for Education Week, as well as a podcast. RAND research is generally first presented to clients in the form of a 45-minute oral briefing. My briefings were twice selected as exemplary presentations at the board of director’s annual meeting. I regularly presented my education work to legislators, policymakers and public policy advocates. I briefed recommendations to boards made up of Fortune 50 CEOs (including the late David Kearns, Xerox CEO and IBM CEO Lou Gerstner) and sought major grants before foundations including Gates, Walton and Carnegie. Today, I spend much of my time presenting analyses to inform or persuade clients of some course of action. I apply this experience and expertise to the challenges facing my clients. We determine the objective, the time or space available to make the case, an outline the argument. The client makes a first draft and we go through it together to identify strong points and gaps. We iterate. If it's a presentation, we decide if it should be a speech or a PowerPoint. PowerPoints have their own language - and I teach it. Rehearsal is crucial to performance and my clients rehearse until it's second nature. In all cases, the client's own voice is crucial to persuasion. It's not my paper or speech, it's yours. I'll be sure of that. If you have a high-stakes paper or presentation contact me to learn more.
